One Question That Changes the Care
Here is one question I wish more professionals asked after pregnancy or infant loss:
“What would feel supportive right now, and what would feel like too much?”
It is simple. But it gives the family something many grieving people do not get enough of: Choice.
Loss can make everything feel chosen for you:
→The appointment.
→The diagnosis.
→The silence.
→The procedure.
→The induction.
→The empty car seat.
→The milk coming in.
→The phone calls.
→The decisions no parent should have to make.
So when we offer care, we want to be careful not to take over in the name of helping.
Support should not become another thing happening to them.
It should be something built with them. You can use this question in so many ways:
“Would photos feel supportive, or would that feel like too much right now?”
“Would you like me to help with messages, or would you prefer privacy?”
“Would talking through options feel helpful, or do you need a few quiet minutes first?”
“Would you like a check-in next week, or would that feel overwhelming?”
This is part of grief-informed care.
Not assuming rushing, disappearing, but gently asking and then honoring their answer.
Here at Evelyn James and Co, we take grief loss and support very seriously because we know that as a society, we haven’t been taught how to support people through their grief. We believe deeply that support is a learned skill, one we are all capable of doing. We have a few options for helping learn the skill of support through loss - our self-paced pregnancy loss education class, and our in person workshops. Want to learn more about us?
